Maintaining a Ceramic Coating: The Dos and Donts

A ceramic coating is one of the best decisions you can make for your vehicle, especially in North Dallas. Between the relentless Texas sun, mineral-heavy hard water, spring pollen, and the brake dust and tar you collect on the Dallas North Tollway and 121, your paint takes a beating most of the year. A quality coating gives you a sacrificial, hydrophobic layer that makes that abuse far easier to manage.
But here is what most shops won't tell you: a ceramic coating is not "set it and forget it." It is a protective layer that still needs the right care to perform and last. Treat it well and a Premium coating can hold strong for three to five years. Treat it carelessly and you can dull its hydrophobic properties in a single season. Here is exactly how to maintain it.
The Dos
Do wash regularly with the right products. The single most important maintenance habit is consistent, gentle washing. Aim for every one to two weeks. A ceramic coating works by staying clean and slick, so contaminants that sit on the surface, like bird droppings, tree sap, and pollen, are the enemy. Use a dedicated pH-neutral car shampoo, never dish soap or an all-purpose cleaner, both of which strip the coating's performance over time.
Do use the two-bucket method. One bucket for your wash solution, one for rinsing your mitt. This keeps grit out of your mitt and prevents you from grinding North Texas road dust back into the paint. Use a clean, soft microfiber wash mitt and quality microfiber drying towels.
Do dry thoroughly, and fast. This matters more here than almost anywhere. DFW tap water is notoriously hard, loaded with calcium and magnesium. When that water dries on its own under the Texas sun, it leaves behind mineral water spots that bond to the coating and become genuinely difficult to remove. Always dry the vehicle completely with a clean microfiber towel or a filtered blower, and do it in the shade whenever possible.
Do apply a ceramic-compatible topper periodically. A ceramic boost spray or SiO2-infused detail spray refreshes the hydrophobic layer, restores that water-beading slickness, and extends the life of the underlying coating. Applied every couple of months, it keeps the surface performing like the day it was installed.
Do address contaminants immediately. Bird droppings and bug splatter are acidic. In summer heat, they can etch into a coating within hours. If you spot one, rinse and gently remove it the same day rather than waiting for your next wash.
The Don'ts
Don't take it through an automatic car wash. This is the fastest way to ruin a coating. The stiff brushes at most tunnel washes inflict swirl marks and micro-scratches, and the harsh, high-pH chemicals they use degrade the coating's surface. The convenience is never worth it. Hand washing, or a touchless wash at most, is the only acceptable route.
Don't let water spots sit. If you do get hard water spots, do not ignore them or scrub aggressively with random household products. Improper removal can scratch the coating. Light spotting can often be handled with the right ceramic-safe spot remover, but stubborn mineral etching may need professional decontamination.
Don't use waxes or sealants on top of it. Traditional carnauba wax and many off-the-shelf sealants don't bond to ceramic and can actually smear, streak, and reduce its hydrophobic effect. Stick to ceramic-specific maintenance products designed to work with the coating chemistry.
Don't wash in direct sunlight or on a hot panel. Park in shade or wash in the cooler parts of the day. On a 100-degree Frisco afternoon, water and soap evaporate before you can rinse them, baking in spots and streaks. Always work on a cool surface.
